The enterprise never wanted to build software.

That was always the point. Every generation of tooling, every vendor slide deck, every analyst quadrant, every three-day offsite with a whiteboard and a consultant, promised the same thing: this time, the business builds it themselves.

BPM was going to do it. Low-code platforms, visual designers, drag-and-drop process maps. Built not by developers but by business analysts who actually understood the work. The pitch was elegant. It was compelling enough to justify the three-month beauty parade: the RFP, the shortlist, the proof-of-concept, the executive steering committee, the selection of a winning platform that the company would standardize on.

Then the platform sat on a shelf.

Individual departments bought RPA licenses. Teams spun up point solutions. Someone in operations found a different BPM tool that actually did the one thing they needed. The "enterprise standard" became an enterprise fiction. Then came case management. Same promise, different vocabulary, same outcome.

And through all of it, the knowledge worker stayed exactly where they'd always been: at the center of the process, doing the work manually, waiting for the tooling to catch up with what they'd been told it could already do.

Building a business solution was as hard as it had ever been. The interfaces had improved. The underlying problem hadn't.


Three years ago, I sat down to build another low-code tool. Another designer. Another canvas.

Two weeks in, I asked one of the early GPT models to parse an invoice, match it against a purchase order, and draft an exception email. It did all three in a single prompt. No workflow. No canvas. No drag-and-drop. Just a description of what needed to happen and a result.

I pivoted shortly after that.

The future wasn't a better UI for automation. It was no UI at all. Just a request and a result. You tell the agent what you need. It does the work. You get the outcome.

Not everyone saw it that way. That was fine. The models weren't there yet either. But the direction was obvious if you'd spent enough years watching the same cycle repeat. Every iteration tried to make building easier. None of them questioned whether the person should be building at all.

Now the models have caught up.

Today I watch the Doozer platform build entire business applications that used to take weeks to configure. It is sobering and elating in equal measure. Sobering because you see how much effort was wasted in the old world. Elating because this is what we always believed was coming.

That working script needs somewhere to run. It needs credentials stored securely and rotated on schedule. It needs monitoring: is it still running? Did it fail at 3 AM? It needs access control, error handling, retry logic, alerting, escalation paths. Each of these is a separate problem to solve. A separate thing to maintain. A separate thing that can break.

The real cost shows up in the second week, when a third-party API changes its response format and your automation breaks silently. Nobody notices until a customer complains. A month in, the operations team needs to change a single threshold value buried on line 247 of a Python script in a repository they've never opened. Two months in, a better model is released and every automation using the old one needs to be found, updated, tested, and redeployed. By month three, finance asks what you're spending on AI across the company and nobody has a unified answer.

AI coding tools make the first day trivial. They don't help with the next thousand.

This is the part that most demo-driven AI conversations skip. The interesting question was never "can the model do the task?" It was always "what happens when the model shouldn't do the task, and a person needs to step in, and that decision needs to be recorded, and the workflow needs to resume exactly where it left off?"
